Kang pointed out that she got it when she was 17. Her parents always told her to be herself, to be who she wants, to be what she wants to be.

On October 20, 1992, Kang was born in San Francisco. Born to South Korean parents KS Kang and Grace Lee, Kang is Korean-American.

His brother Alex was a San Diego State golfer. She began dating Las Vegas-based professional golfer Maverick McNealy in 2018, but their relationship ended in 2024.

Raised in Southern California, she qualified for the 2007 US Women’s Open at the age of 14.

She attended Oak Park High School for her high school education before moving to Westlake High School early in preparation for her spring 2010 college start at Pepperdine University in Malibu.

As a junior golfer, Kang competed regularly on the Southern California PGA Junior Tour, sharing the field with former SCPGA members Lizette Salas and Brianna Do.

In the spring of 2011, Kang participated in the regular season for the Pepperdine golf team.

She expressed disappointment in not being able to participate in the 2011 NCAA playoffs due to an academic decision.

Kang competed in all four majors as an amateur in 2011 and won the US Women’s Amateur in 2010.

Three major tournaments saw her eliminated, including the LPGA Championship, where she was the only player not playing professionally.
