The death of Lior Lubin linked to cancer
At the age of 46, Lior Lubin, former EuroLeague player for Maccabi Tel Aviv, succumbed to cancer after a long battle with the disease.
Despite a previous brush with the disease, Lubin’s health suddenly deteriorated several months ago.
Faced with the doctors’ grim prognosis, he was released from the hospital and spent his last days at home surrounded by his family, as reported by Sport5.
Known for his ties to current Maccabi coach Oded Kattash, Lubin was visited by close friends, including Kattash, in the weeks before his death.
After playing professionally at the international level, notably with Maccabi during the 2002-2003 season, and at the national level, Lubin became a coach.
In 2014, he took on the role of assistant coach for the Israeli national team.
Lubin coached Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the current season, but left the club in November due to health problems.
His coaching career included assistant coaching roles for Maccabi, Panathinaikos Athens, Hapoel Holon and other clubs.
The 46-year-old, a former Maccabi Tel Aviv champion in 2003, has requested to be released from Hapoel Be’er Sheva in November 2024.
The death of Lior Lubin marked the end of a courageous fight against a serious illness that had tormented him for a long time.

Lior Lubin, born September 19, 1977 in Ramat Gan, Israel, was an accomplished figure in Israeli basketball as a player and coach.
He played for various teams during his playing career, including Maccabi Petah Tikva, Ironi Ramat Gan, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Azovmash, Apollon Patras and CSKA Sofia.
Lubin achieved notable success as a player, winning the Israeli League championship in 2003 and earning the Israeli League assists leader title in 2000.
After becoming a coach, Lubin held various positions, starting as assistant coach of Hapoel Gilboa Galil from 2008 to 2010.
He then became head coach of Hapoel Gilboa Galil from 2010 to 2013 and has coached with Hapoel Holon, Maccabi Ashdod and the Israeli national team.
He notably contributed to the Maccabi Tel Aviv coaching staff as an assistant coach during the 2016-2017 season.
In 2019, Lubin returned to Hapoel Gilboa Galil as head coach and later worked with Panathinaikos as an assistant coach in 2024.
Later, in 2024, Lior Lubin took over as head coach from Ironi Ness Ziona; in 2024, he takes on the role of head coach of Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
His coaching triumphs include winning the Israel Cup in 2017 and demonstrating his deep dedication and valuable contributions to the advancement of basketball in Israel.
