Details and update on the Gina Tenney case

In a tragic turn of events, Gina Tenney’s life came to a devastating end when her lifeless body was discovered floating on the Mahoning River on December 30, 1985.

It was a muskrat trapper who, while examining his traps, came across Gina’s body, which changed the course of the investigation forever.

Just two weeks after the discovery, the coroner determined that Gina had died of suffocation.

There were strangulation marks on her neck and wrists, and her upper body bore numerous bruises.

Shockingly, Gina had even suffered a broken ankle as a result of the heinous crime committed against her.

Early on, local authorities zeroed in on a suspect, Bennie Adams. Their suspicions stemmed from Adams’ relationship with a girl in the apartment below Gina’s.

Although forensic investigations were not yet advanced, Gina’s debit card was found on 28-year-old Adams. Gina’s car keys were also discovered in his trash can.

Unfortunately, the available forensic evidence did not conclusively link Adams to Gina’s murder or rape.

However, investigators came across a crucial piece of evidence: a potholder from Adam’s girlfriend’s apartment was found in Gina’s apartment.

In addition, Adams owned a television that probably came from Gina’s apartment upstairs.

As advances in forensic technology became apparent, the Ohio Attorney General’s office launched a program allowing law enforcement to resubmit unsolved cases for DNA testing.

The investigators assigned to Gina’s case kept a close eye on Adams over the years and immediately used this program to investigate his possible involvement in her murder and rape.

In 2004, Adams, then a registered sex offender who had just been released from prison where he had served 18 years for the 1985 kidnapping, rape and robbery of a school principal, provided DNA samples.

The samples were quickly tested and confirmed to be a match with DNA found on Gina’s clothing and body.

Gina’s rape kit was kept for nearly two decades, waiting for the day it could undergo official testing.

Finally, in October 2008, Bennie Adams was convicted of the heinous crimes of murder and rape of Gina Tenney.

In 2024, Bennie was granted a new hearing on whether his jury was biased.
