Slater was born on June 18, 1983 in Nambour, Queensland, Australia, to parents Judy and Ron Slater.
From a young age, the athlete was reportedly a big fan of rugby league football and thoroughbred racing.
He began playing contact sports for the Brothers club in Innisfail, Queensland at the age of 18.
Billy then went to Innisfail State High School, where he graduated in 1999 at the age of 16.
