Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) recently marked a significant milestone in its commitment to advanced medical care with the opening of six new operating rooms and a 14-bay recovery unit. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held March 18 marked their completion and highlighted NWH’s commitment to modernizing patient care through technology and innovation.
Advanced facilities
The hospital’s new operating theaters are an iconic demonstration of its dedication to patient-centered care, with rooms designed with soft, calming blue hues for peace and calm, as well as gleaming silver walls, white ceilings , state-of-the-art equipment and welcoming staff which together create an environment that is both technologically advanced and welcoming. Each operating room – typically 655 square feet – can accommodate the technology and personnel required for minimally invasive surgeries while maintaining the highest standards of medical care.
Generous contributions
Hospital staff, generous donors, officials and approximately 100 guests attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate and recognize several key donors who made the construction of the new operating rooms possible – these donors include David Miller , MD; Dawn Tinger (wife of Al Tinger MD); the La Motta children; Seema Boesky; Peggy Collins MD and Nancy Karch whose support was essential to bring this project to fruition.
Improved patient experience
NWH’s new operating theater offers patients an enhanced experience with universal pre- and post-operative bays designed to maximize privacy and infection control, advanced heating and ventilation systems ensure background noise levels ideal, allowing clear communication between doctors, nurses and operating room staff. as well as more space and greater privacy for post-operative patient rooms which have been converted from double rooms to single rooms, allowing more privacy for themselves and their families after surgery.
Community effort
Joel Seligman, CEO of NWH, expressed his sincere thanks for the joint effort that made this project a reality. “Today we celebrate an incredible achievement that took the efforts of everyone involved – thank you very much! » Seligman exclaimed. Additionally, he noted the vast improvement in medical care over the course of a century, as patients would have been terrified just being near an operating room, whereas today they can rest easy knowing that they will only receive top-of-the-line care right in their backyard. .
Leadership and support
At this event, Seligman expressed his sincere thanks to Hatsy Vallar, Dr. Anita Grover and Marshal Peris as co-chairs of the capital campaign for their leadership and support in this effort. Additionally, he recognized the contributions of Mike Caruso’s Facilities Team with Project Managers Chris Shopinski and Jeanne Wong as well as Stephanie Rosenthal Bryan Guss Deb Morfea Dana Protomastro Craig Brandt of the Surgical Services Team for their contributions and their team efforts.
Nancy Karch, chair of the Northern Westchester Hospital Board of Trustees, revealed the next phase of this project – renovating the current operating rooms and creating pre- and post-anesthesia bays as well as a full clinical laboratory – while thanking all the doctors involved who provided superior care while helping to make this vision a reality.
Public recognition
Attending were officials, including Susan Spear of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s Hudson Valley office; New York State Senator Terrence Murphy; Assemblyman David Buchwald and Mount Kisco Mayor Mike Cindrich. These officials warmly congratulated the hospital for its achievements and its positive impact on their communities.

Members of the Northwell Health family joined in celebrating this momentous occasion. Dr. Gary Giangola, chairman of surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital; Dr. Gene F. Coppa, chairman of the Department of Surgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center; Eugene Tangney, senior vice president and chief administrative officer of Northwell; and Mark Vincent, vice president of marketing strategy, were on hand to show their appreciation of Northwell Hospital’s accomplishments.
A proud moment
Marshal Peris, MD, director of spine surgery at Northwell Health’s Orthopedic and Spine Institute, proudly noted the importance of the new operating room: he is “taking great care to achieve a new exciting level of sophistication.” Dr. Peris expressed gratitude to his colleagues whose support made this project possible and shared the insights of Dr. Tom Lansen (former Chief of Neurosurgery at NWH) regarding his notable advances in neuroscience and spine surgery.
After the inauguration ceremony, the guests were given a tour of the new facilities by the management of the surgical services of the operating rooms and the pre- and post-anesthesia care unit. This event marked a new era at Northern Westchester Hospital, as its unwavering commitment to healthcare excellence was demonstrated as it strived to serve its community with superior medical care.
