Darren Dutchyshen, an iconic figure in Canadian sports broadcasting, died peacefully at the age of 57 on Wednesday morning. Dutchyshen publicly revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis on September 9, 2021, and took an extended leave of absence from TSN to seek treatment. Upon her return, co-hosting SportsCentre alongside Jennifer Hedger in September 2022, Dutchyshen shared with viewers her journey. During this momentous occasion, he shared details of what his journey had involved as well as some grueling moments from the treatment itself.
Dutchyshen’s experience revealed that the cancer had metastasized to various parts of his body, including his skull, ribs, legs and hips. Despite the seriousness of his condition, Dutchyshen remains optimistic while emphasizing that it is treatable: “This type of cancer doesn’t go away with a quick shot in the arm,” he said bluntly; nevertheless, despite these challenges, Dutchyshen felt “really, really good,” finding strength through work at the Sports Center and finding comfort in it all.
A rich career at TSN
Dutchyshen’s career at TSN began in 1995, quickly becoming an indispensable member of the SportsDesk and SportsCentre programs. For nearly 30 years, his charismatic presence and endearing personality won over viewers wherever he appeared. Born in Regina and raised in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, Dutchyshen brought true passion and energy to every show that resonated with sports fans across Canada.
Dutchyshen played an integral role in SportsCentre and TSN’s CFL broadcasts, hosting primetime Olympics during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Summer Olympics and engaging audiences with his energetic wit and infectious humor.
